Chapter 1, Time To Survive
“Tommy.... Kate, time for dinner” Sarah called to her kids. Sarah pulled a fresh sizzling and crackling lasagna from the oven and placed it on the counter. “Hey John it’s ready”, “finally... the smell has been killing me, it looks amazing hun”. Kate set the dinner table with napkins, forks, and knives at every seat, Tommy was in charge of the drinks and filled 3 glasses with water and ice and a plastic cup with just water for himself. As the family gathered around the table to eat the TV sound went silent followed by a loud buzz and warning of national emergency. John froze “what’s this about” sarah nervously grumbled, the TV flickered and a live broadcast came on, the military was shooting, cars were crashing, Washington DC was falling apart. “Oh god John, is this a terrorist attack?” “I don’t know, I hope not”, “kids take your food into the other room”, “but mom why can’t”, “I said go Tommy”. The TV was hectic, it looked like something out of a movie, gunfire everywhere until... “oh god that guy is eating someone John” the TV suddenly flashed off. Then the town sirens came on, and the TV flashed one more message, “ALL CITIZENS FIND SAFETY, INFECTIOUS DISEASE SPREADING RAPIDLY”. “Ok Sarah we have to leave grab the kids and pack the car”. Tommy and John both hunters, fishermen, and avid shooters had plenty of guns and survival supplies, the Keen family also had something of great value with the start of the outbreak, a camp in the rural region on the south side of Moosehead Lake just outside of the town of Greenville.
John grabbed Tommy to gather their outdoors supplies along with guns and ammo, Sarah and Kate collected all of the families personal belongings along with suitcases full of cloths. At the Keen’s camp was more outdoors equipment along with cloths, vehicles (snowmobiles, ATV’s, and boats). The family was frantic running through their house, collecting the supplies they needed most, John’s younger brother Luke luckily was ex military and had his FFA. The FFA license allowed him to build and sell guns including fully automatic rifles and handguns, because of his military background Luke also had had a knack for survival, every week he would drop supplies of MRE’s (meals ready to eat) off to Tommy because being Luke’s only boy nephew over the years they grew really close. In the backseat of johns dodge 3500 limited they loaded all the families guns, ammo, and body armor that Luke had supplied them with to use for tactical shooting courses in the case of an emergency. Tommy dropped the tailgate and loaded all the rest of the outdoors supplies, food, and water, within these supplies were water purifiers, thermal optics, belts, knives, matches, fire starters, fishing equipment, etc... Sarah and Kate finally had all the family belongings and cloths packed and in Sarah’s Lincoln Navigator they organized it all to fit in the way back. Along with minor survival supplies just in case the two cars were separated. “Tommy your going to go with your mother, now listen if we get separated you immediately call me on the radio, if anything goes wrong I want you with your mother to keep her safe. Don’t worry dad we’ll be okay”. Tommy grabbed his bod armor, shooting belt loaded with four 30 round magazines for his Bulgarian AK-74 his uncle Luke built for him on his 18th birthday, he also had two 19 round magazines for his Glock 34, a knife, and emergency medical kit all stacked on his belt in the case of need.
John in Kate pulled out of the families driveway in Johns loud grumbling raptor that had the Hemi Race Package engine, followed but Tommy and Sarah in her subtle quiet navigator. The neighborhood was half frantic half quiet, many of the houses had everything closed and locked and some were rushing to pack everything they had, it was obvious the word had spread and the other families were trying to hold strong or make it to a military safe haven. “Dad?” “Yes Kate”, “why aren’t we going to a military stronghold?” “Because I don’t know what is going on right now or who to trust”. As the two cars advanced further and further from their home all 4 of them looked in the mirrors, wondering, hoping, and praying they’d see their family home again and even better start a new life in it someday. As they got to the main road cars had already lined the highway, most heading south though. “How dumb all these people are going towards the problem mom, right where everything started is the direction they are going”. I-295 south was so packed full of cars it looked like rush hour coming in and out of Boston. “Wait a second what is that?” “Jesus Christ Kate we need to go faster”, “dddd-dad are those zombies?” “don’t look sweetie”. As the families overlooked the highway cars were stopping and people were being eaten. John picked up speed and got onto the spur, Tommy following close behind stepped on it and was on his dads tail. Sarah was traumatized by the sights she just saw along with Kate, to much so to speak. As the family sped up I-295 north John made a call to Luke off a sat phone “hey Luke”, “John this is wild”, “I know man I gathered the family we are heading to Moosehead”, “ok brother I’m on my way to I grabbed mom and dad”, “thank god I was just about to call them next but anyways I’ll see you up their”, “safe travels John call me if you hit any trouble”, “same to you Luke protect the family especially Al where she is pregnant”, “will do brother”. The ride was smooth, Kate and Sarah both sleeping in their separate rides while Tommy and John navigated the darkness. It seemed for now the family had outrun the outbreak, but John knew that would only last so long with how fast it was spreading. They pulled through Greenville around 10:30 pm and everything was quiet, John thought to himself he would check on Gavin and Alec the next day. They were father and son and really close to the Keen family. Next they entered the private 4 mile dirt road that lead to the two Keen family camps, as their lights shined the driveway they saw Luke’s big Mercedes Van and Al’s big Ford F450 with animals from their farm on a trailer in the back. In the corner was another disconnected trailer that appeared to have Luke and Alison’s big farm tractor on it.
The family unpacked the cars into one of the three garage bays, Sarah and Kate worked on bringing the family belongings up stairs to the Maine floor, while John and Tommy unpacked and sorted the rest of the gear. Through the woods Luke came from their parents camp, “Tommy! What’s up buddy”, “Lukeee”. They hugged and then Luke quickly moved to John, “what the hell is happening”, “I don’t know Luke I think it’s zombies. “Zombies? like from the movies John?” “That’s what it looks like Luke”. As the two conversed about the current crisis Tommy listened closely then began to go over his gear frantically. Tommy grabbed all his extra magazines a little over 20 for his rifles and 5 for his handgun, he loaded every sing one and then sharpened his knife, he wasn’t like the rest of his generation he was prepared, he trained every week in the summer, his family was tight knit, and he knew how to survive in the outdoors elements. Tommy had all of his gear ready to go for town the next day, John came up the stairs with Luke along with the rest of the family, Phil the grandfather, Karen the grandmother, and Alison Luke’s wife pregnant with their first child. They all sat around the island at Johns camp to make a plan. “Ok first things first we need safety, we need a large fence around both our properties down to the water, second we need to get ahold of Gavin and Alec tomorrow, and third we need to scavenge all the gas and supplies from Indian Hill market in town”, John started with these three goals as their main plan for safety and survival. “That sounds like a good plan son, while you guys go into town tomorrow I can work on digging out a foundation for the fence with the tractor”, “alright dad sounds good”, “Luke you guys get some rest tonight I’ll meet you early in the morning with Tommy”, “sounds like a plan John.” The rest of the family took the short walk back to the other camp, John and Tommy got the car packed and supplies prepared for their short drive in the morning. The camp still had power do to solar energy that John and Phil had installed for the case of power outages or an emergency. John and Tommy set their alarms for first light at about 4:30am and to hopefully be out of the house at 5:00am.
Tommy jumped to the buzzing of his alarm, he tossed the covers off and put on his carhartt pants and long sleep shirt. He sat on the edge of the bed putting socks on and he could smell the strong aroma of the coffee John was brewing along with the sizzling of eggs in a pan. Tommy tip toed out of his room by his mom and dads so he didn’t wake up his mom or Kate. “Morning Tommy”, “Morning dad”, “I got some coffee and food ready for you buddy I want to be out the door in about 15-20 minutes”. Tommy ate all his food and grabbed his metal rambler cup to pour his coffee into. He went down the stairs into the garage and strapped his belt and plate carrier on and attached his 2 point sling to his gun and threw it on over his chest. They loaded in the truck, Tommy and John sat waiting for Luke, the Hemi’s exhaust growled as the engine idled. Luke opened the passenger door and hopped in with his gear on ready to go, “you boys ready or what”, “of course Luke I was starting to think you were going to sleep in.” They backed out of the 200 yard driveway and took off up dirt road. After a slightly bumpy couple minute ride they made it to the Maine road. Roughly 6 miles out of Greenville the two Keen family camps laid on the the rural outskirts of the town and Moosehead Lake. The drive into town was a ghost land, no cars, no trucks, no ATV’s, just Tommy, John, and Luke. As they entered town, the rumbling of the Hemi was the only noise to be heard. They pulled down the neighborhood road to Gavin and Alec’s house. Driving down the road there was still nobody only ditched cars and run down houses. “Jesus John looks like the panic made up hear, I hope that’s all” Luke said this with confidence but it was clear he was hiding a bit of nervousness. They pulled into 47 Lincoln Dr, they all unloaded the truck with caution and John when up to the door. He knocked and out of the corner of his eye Tommy could see Gavin peek through the curtains. As he opened the door knowing his friends were here he sighed and hugged John, Alec followed out shortly behind Gavin. “Guys we need to get out of the street, the kids in town... uhhh they they think they’re in charge.” Gavin was talking frantically. “What do you mean?” John questioned. “All my friends think this is the time for our generation to prevail and show who should be leading this country, they have created their own little group or whatever you want to call them and they don’t settle things the way we as Americans should, they act like the older generation and anyone who follows them is their enemy, even my friends have came after me already.” Alec explained all this with great detail. “Listen guys we’re gonna grab fence supplies and gas from town grab your stuff and load your car up, get to our camps as fast as possib....” Luke was cut off by the noise of a engine as a truck came roaring down the road. Tommy recognized a kid hanging out the window with a gun, that was Caleb and he didn’t look friendly.
“Tommy.... Kate, time for dinner” Sarah called to her kids. Sarah pulled a fresh sizzling and crackling lasagna from the oven and placed it on the counter. “Hey John it’s ready”, “finally... the smell has been killing me, it looks amazing hun”.
