The Walking Dead is a modern TV show built upon the timeless fear of zombies in American culture. Created by Frank Darabont and Angela King, The Walking Dead explores the horrors of our culture, these fears and anxieties being how evil humans can be when the structure of society collapses. Another fear is the gore and brutality zombies inflict along with their never ending pursuit to kill the living. The Walking Dead uses these two fears and anxieties to really carry the load of horror during the series, in my adaptation I want to change the location to Maine because I know the state better then any other, I also want to exemplify two different groups of humans that being the older generation and the millennials because often in the modern day the millennials are looked at as different then the older generation. I am choosing to do these adaptations because I think a horror series is more horrifying the closer it is to reality and I think making two relative groups by splitting generations is more realistic then having random people of every generation just forming a group and following under one leader. My adaptation will keep the base of zombies the same in The Walking Dead but I will change how us as a human race reacts to the outbreak so it is more realistic along with moving the story to Maine.
I like how The Walking Dead affects the viewers. It makes us think twice about how our world is run and how easily everything can collapse if given the chance or reason and to me that is the scariest thing, would we come together or fall apart if we faced a apocalypse? I also like how The Walking Dead uses such a simple topic of horror by using the zombies, zombies are something very involved with our culture and are involved in a lot of things even music. I like how The Walking Dead uses zombies in a realistic way and not as some mythical unbelievable creatures but instead they give a reasoning to how they work and how the infection takes over. Even though I am a fan of how humans fall apart in the series I think it can be adapted slightly to make it more threatening/horrifying with how society would more likely react and that being the millennials splitting from the older generation giving the millennials the “freedom” that is so much desired.
Changing the setting to Maine would truly bring this series to the next level. Maine is a very weird state when it comes to weather especially the northern part of the state and that is where I will move this story to. Northern Maine is a beautiful trap, having first hand experience in this part of the state gives me the understanding of the horrifying possibilities that could be explored. Some examples is really tough terrain and erratic weather, in fact with the rapid temperature changes come great risks that the common person doesn’t think about, one being microbursts. A microburst is almost like a small tornado with huge wind gusts, and my dad had experience with one in a remote pond fishing shortly after ice out when the water was very cold, he was thrown along with his canoe about 20 yards and almost died from hypothermia. This is one possibility out of hundreds that can be explored with the introduction of northern Maine. I will keep the time period the same but change the characters, I am doing this because everyone has grown used to the characters involved in The Walking Dead currently and with the change of the fallen society structure I want whole new characters to exemplify my adaptation. I would make this a prequel in order to set up the new adaptation for the rest of the series.
In my adaptation of The Walking Dead I will change the setting and the way society falls do to the reflection of our culture and attitudes in the modern day. When a apocalypse happens and our government falls our generation will split do to the general disagreement in our society today with everyday aspects of freedom along with politics, this adaptation will be more realistic and the reality of it will be even more horrifying. My goal with this is to make my audience question how we will truly react if this situation is presented to us. I want my adaptation to be the most realistic and with the realism comes fear because us as humans fear the truth.
